  • Healthcare mobile app development
  • UX for sensitive user groups

The Goal

The primary goal of the OptiMAT project was to determine whether a mobile application could help improve treatment outcomes for people receiving medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder.

Specifically, the app was designed to:

  1. Encourage consistent daily check‑ins
  2. Help participants track mood, cravings, and medication adherence
  3. Deliver supportive, non‑judgmental feedback
  4. Provide timely alerts in high‑risk situations
  5. Maintain strict privacy and data security standards

The application needed to be simple enough for everyday use, yet robust enough to support clinical research.

The Background

The OptiMAT mobile app (short for Optimizing Medication‑Assisted Treatment) was created to support individuals receiving treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The initiative was funded through an NIH grant and led by clinical researchers at UAMS who were looking for a practical way to extend care beyond the clinic and into patients’ daily lives.

Enqbator partnered with UAMS to plan, design, and build a secure, patient‑focused mobile experience that could be used as part of a six‑month clinical study. The goal was not to replace treatment, but to reinforce it, through daily engagement, self‑awareness, and timely support.

The Challenge

Designing OptiMAT presented a unique set of challenges.

First, the app needed to work for a vulnerable population. Users had to feel safe, respected, and in control of their own data. The experience could not feel clinical or overwhelming, and it had to avoid anything that might discourage participation.

Second, the project required cross‑platform delivery. The app needed to run reliably on both iOS and Android, with consistent functionality across devices.

Finally, the app had to support real‑world behavioral patterns. Participants weren’t always in ideal environments when interacting with the app. Features like reminders, progress visualization, and location‑based alerts had to feel helpful not intrusive.

The Solution

Enqbator designed and developed two mobile applications one for the Apple App Store and one for Google Play along with a supporting administrative tool for researchers and clinicians.

Core App Features

The OptiMAT mobile experience focused on clarity and ease of use:

All participant data was isolated and visible only to the individual user.

1

Daily self‑monitoring

of medication use, cravings, and mood

2

Visual progress tracking

allowing participants to see trends over time

3

Personalized notifications

that encourage consistency and completion

4

Educational resources

Educational resources and coping tips to support abstinence

5

GPS‑based “hotspot” alerts

delivering just‑in‑time warnings when users enter areas associated with higher relapse risk

The Result

Administrative Tools

In addition to the mobile apps, Enqbator built an administrative interface that allowed authorized UAMS staff to:

  • Register and manage participants
  • Monitor overall app usage and engagement
  • Maintain participant records securely
This ensured the app could support clinical oversight without compromising patient privacy.

OptiMAT is actively used in a clinical trial at UAMS by individuals receiving medication‑assisted treatment for opioid use disorder. The project has also received national recognition.

OptiMAT was named one of five winning entries in the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) “Product Prototypes to Combat Drug Craving” Challenge, earning an honorable mention and a cash prize.

The app has also been recognized in industry awards, including placement in the Horizon Interactive Awards and Vega Awards under the Mobile Apps category.

The Impact

OptiMAT demonstrates how thoughtful mobile technology can play a meaningful role in healthcare especially when designed around real human needs. By meeting users where they are, the app helps reinforce treatment, encourage consistency, and provide support at critical moments. The project stands as a model for how digital tools can responsibly support clinical care while maintaining trust, privacy, and dignity.
